In the Beginning - Sometime back in the winter of 2004 I got a call from my brother asking me if I could step in and help out an aquaintence of his from when he was working in the fitness industry out west, Terry Ahern, who was having some difficulty getting his web site designed and up and running.
It turned out he did really need the help in that the fellow had contracted with to produce the site had a pretty awful design in development and thy had been working on it since I think that fall and there was no real timetable in place as to when everything was finally going to happen on-line.
The Origional CoachTerry.com Web Site - On Saturday February 7th 2004 I stepped in and after a few conversations with Terry about what he needed at the time and what direction he wanted to go with the site (he one day wanted to build a library of recording of his radio show that his listeners could download) he provided me with some text copy he wanted to use and I then designed what I thought was a sharp clean good looking 13 page site (see that attached screenshots to the right) and then made the hosting arrangements for him got him up and running by Friday the 13th of that following week with his CoachTerry.com web site.
Given the story of difficulty and hardship that Terry had given me at the time (to which I agree that there was some truth to it) and that he was just getting going with all this and was a 'friend' of my brothers I told Terry was only going to charge him $400.00 for work that I would typically charge out at $913.75 in real billing rate dollars (10.75 hrs x $85) and that we would leave it that for the time being. And he paid the $400 promptly via a PalPal Invoice link I provided him.
Terry Loses the CoachTerry.com Domain Name - Despite the fact that Terry was now up and running he still however had a few things he had to do to finish off the job we had started. The fellow he had originally started off on this web site development project with had registered CoachTerry.com in his name and not Terry's so in reality Terry didn't even own his web site's domain name. This fellow though in surrendering and giving up on the project did the right thing and since he had control of the name set up the registrar records to point to the IP address where I had set up Terry's account but Terry would have to work with him directly to secure the transfer of the domain name ownership. To save money on the transfer of registrar fee that would be charged for transferring the owner over Terry would wait till the fall and just pick it up fresh as it expired.
The fall then came around and due to his lack of oranizational planning and preparation Terry lost track of what he was supposed to do and the domain name registration expired and he ended up losing it. With no DNS record to point to the IP address the site then sat there for perhaps for a few days if not weeks in internet limbo.
The New AskCoachTerry.com Web Site - After talking with Terry at that time about the problem he was given a suggestion (I think by the people at GoDaddy which was where Coachterry.com was registered that he should consider adopting a new domain name of AskCoachTerry.com which as it turned out I think was an altogether better choice for a domain name anyway.
Looking at the situation I agreed with that and even discovered he could save a few bucks over Verio by having his new domain name hosted by GoDaddy.com too so he gave me his credit card information so that I could then on his behalf set up his domain name and hosting account with GoDaddy.com and I did just that. We closed the account with Verio and working the weekend of Oct 22nd & 23rd 2004 I made the appropriate changes to the pages in his site to reflect the new domain name and e-mail address and got his site uploaded to the GoDaddy server.
And I did all that for nothing.
I would have charged any other client $467.50 for the time I spent working on the the transfer and making the necessary changes to the sites pages (5.5 hrs x $85) but for whatever reason I didn't bring it up at the time and just never charged him.
And apparently I also did all that without any thanks too. I've searched through all the old emails and I can't find anything from Terry after that weekend thanking me for the effort I put in (or for not charging him for it) nor did I receive any kind of email at Christmas or the end of the year thanking me either. To tell you the truth though it didn't mean anything to me at the time and I only mention it now in retrospect in that behavior fits in perfectly with the cheap, selfish, thankless, manipulative person I would eventually discover he really is.
Publishing the Second Opinion Show Radio Show Programs - Come the following summer, August of 2005, Terry contacted me and we came up with a plan to finally build that library of his Second Opinion Show radio programs that we had talked about over a year earlier.
I worked with terry and his producer to set up a process where using the FTP log-in information I provided them they would name the MP3 files according to a format I prescribed and then send me the text they wanted to use for the show's entry and I would then format and put that into the HTML page link it to the file and update the page on the server (see the Email August 5, 2005 10:44:01 AM EDT
The Second Opinion Show).
Trouble on Their End - Doing it that way my effort involved only a minute or two so I was glad to do it and never brought it up or complained that I was doing it for nothing but it didn't stay that way for long. By the end of the month for whatever reason (I was never able to find out) their FTP process had broken down and Terry then had his producer just e-mail me the MP3 files. Terry would then follow up and call giving me dictation over the phone as to what he wanted in the way of descritive text for the podcast's blurb.
I would then download the MP3 to my machine rewrite the page and then upload the MP3 and HTML page. A minute or two of my time had turned into 15 although with doing it virtually every week I was able to get the process down in time to where it was taking on average 7 to 12 minutes. But that was again 7 to 12 minutes of my time I was volunteering to put in on my Saturdays which are really intended for all the other things I want to explore and do.

I did however talk to Terry on several occasions about him getting a copy of Macromedia Contribute and I could then set the site up and train him on it so he could update and maintain the site himself but for reasoning that he was too busy at the time we always seemed to put it off making the move to Macromedia's (now Adobe's) Contribute.
More to come. This article is underdevelopment and I still have a lot to tell (and I haven't ever really gotten to the good parts yet) along with supporting emails too so if your interested be sure to check back soon. (Wednesday, April 25, 2007 ; 5:00 PM )
